High School Experience: National Merit Scholar, elected Governor of Kentucky Boys’ State (American Legion sponsored program), appointed Justice of the Supreme Court at Boys’ Nation (same sponsorship) 1959, valedictorian of graduating class 1960

Undergraduate Experience: Harvard College, B.S. 1964, Chairman, Eliot House; stroked varsity heavyweight crew, officer of Fly Club

Graduate Experience: University of Florida, M.D. 1968 with extensive externships at Guy’s Hospital, London, under Sir Hedley Atkins, 1966, and at the Osler Ward, Johns Hopkins, 1967; elected to Alpha Omega Alpha (national honorary medical society) 1968; recipient of Watson Research Award 1967.

Postgraduate Experience: Surgical Internship at Stanford University Medical Center 1968-1969; residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery, Stanford University Medical Center 1969-1974. Assistant Professor of Surgery at Stanford 1974-1975

Intra-residency Experience: Asked by the head of Stanford Public Health Department, Dr. Count Gibson, and by the head of Stanford Surgery Department, Dr. Robert Chase, to develop a primary care Physicians’ Assistant/Nurse Practitioner Program. Singlehandedly founded the project including developing a curriculum in an educational network that included the Nursing School and several community colleges in the Bay Area, writing the grant application to NIH, and establishing the program in 1972. Celebrated its first graduating class in 1973 and still active.

As a result of the immediately preceding effort, appointed by then Governor Ronald Reagan to the Health Manpower Commission (responsible for funding primary care residencies throughout California) and to the Special Medical Practice Act Committee (to rewrite state law to allow function of graduates from the PA and NP programs).

  • Joined the Sansum Medical Clinic in Santa Barbara, California, 1975 as sole plastic and reconstructive surgeon. Formed independent corporation.
  • Diplomat, American Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 1981 to retirement
  • Served on Sansum Medical Clinic Board of Directors 1986-1992
  • Served as Ethics Committee Chairman of the County Medical Society
  • With Otto Sartorius, M.D., cofounded the Southern California Breast Cancer Institute, 1976 to retirement
  • President, The Pot and Kettle, 2005-2008
  • Annually spent several weeks overseas in pro bono surgical correction of congenital defects, e.g. Doctors Without Borders (Middle East), Interplast (Central and South America), Billy Graham Evangelical Hospital Fund (Asia), and latter Day Saints (Pacific Islands). In the process have visited (not worked in) every country in the world
  • Retired from practice 1998 (extensive cervical herniations requiring fusion and years of physical therapy)

  • Founder and President of Hand-X-Tenders, a company that creates surgical instrumentation for the operating room and devices to increase the manual function of the disabled, 1995-present
