All too often, well-meaning leaders plan for change without talking to the communities for which they are planning. At FIHI, we know that to improve oral health outcomes for our most vulnerable children, we must speak directly with families who experience oral health disparity.
In 2013, with the help of collaborative partners and pilot project funding, FIHI began talking to parents in Miami-Dade and Broward counties in order to identify barriers to accessing and utilizing children’s oral health care.
As part of our Oral Health 2020 initiative and our work to support the Florida Oral Health Alliance, we have expanded to other parts of Florida to build a statewide Oral Health Consumer Advisory Council. This virtual network of parents and professionals meets monthly to share feedback and experiences that help to inform oral health strategies and test interventions. The consumer advisory council makes recommendations based on the challenges, needs and strengths of Florida’s communities. Learn how you can participate.
