2014 Florida State University College of Medicine Faculty Council Keeper of the Mission Award

The Florida State University College of Medicine Faculty Council Keeper of the Mission Award honors the clinical faculty member who has distinguished him/herself by participating in activities that model the mission of the college to educate and develop exemplary physicians who practice patient-centered health care, discover and advance knowledge, and are responsive to community needs, especially through service to elder, rural, minority and underserved populations. The recipient this year was appointed to our faculty in 2004 and is currently Clinical Professor with us. Perhaps more than any other FSU Orlando Campus faculty member, this physician is the embodiment of the spirit and intent behind this recognition.

Dr. Keven Sherin is Director of the Orange County Health Department and is a national leader in public health and epidemiology holding and having held a host of prestigious leadership positions at the local, state, and national levels. His past and current appointments and leadership positions are so numerous that we don’t have the time to list them all tonight. But most pertinent to this award, he is also a champion for those less fortunate, those in need and those underserved. Should it be the citizens of South Apopka suffering from chemical waste in their environment from years past, or those who have dropped through the safety net of medical care, and those without healthcare access despite the intent of Obamacare, Kevin has been their advocate at every turn. He has worked hard to improve access to healthcare for those with obstacles to access, be it primary or specialty care.

Despite the grinding schedule of his official duties, he still dedicates timeless hours for the care of the underserved both on and off the job. He is a consummate spokesman for them within those auspices of city hall, county government and state government. He is an outstanding public servant and in the education of medical students in the settings of the medially underserved. Indicative of this, he recently received the prestigious Ruth M. McKeefrey Physician Provider Volunteer Award from Shepherd’s Hope Clinic in Orlando as the most dedicated physician provider to those populations. Kevin, you are the very definition of the FSU College of Medicine Mission. Congratulations.
